Current Activities

Genesee Avenue Traffic Shift: On January 2, 2018, crews began shifting traffic to the outer lanes of Genesee Avenue from La Jolla Village Drive to Nobel Drive. Crews also began construction on the viaduct - a bridge structure that will carry the Trolley down the middle of Genesee Avenue. This work is focused on Genesee Avenue, from Regents Road to Nobel Drive. Northbound and southbound lanes of Genesee Avenue will be restriped and shifted to the outer lanes from Regents Road to Nobel Drive while crews begin work in the median. Large drilling equipment will be set up within the median. Traffic control phasing and lane configuration may vary between day and night work hours. Traffic control signs, including necessary detours for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists, will be posted. These types of traffic controls will be deployed at various times through the project's construction.

Balboa Avenue: Crews continue to work nights to minimize impacts to local traffic. For all residents and businesses in the area, access to driveways will be maintained throughout the project. There may be some portions of roads closed or detoured at night. 

Completed Activities

Overnight Closure of La Jolla Village Drive: On Sunday, October 9, intermittent, overnight closures will be in place as crews stripe and install signage. 

Intermittent closures will be phased in the following order: 

  •  Southbound I-5 on-ramp from Genesee Avenue and single lanes of southbound I-5 between Genesee  Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive
  •  Southbound I-5 on-ramp from eastbound La Jolla Village Drive
  •  Southbound I-5 off-ramp to La Jolla Village Drive
  •  Both directions of La Jolla Village Drive and the southbound I-5 on-ramp from westbound La Jolla  Village Drive.

Work and closure hours will be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please use caution when traveling near the work area.

Overnight Closure of Nobel Drive: On Wednesday, Oct. 5, an overnight full closure will be in place on the Nobel Drive overcrossings as crews stripe and install signage. Additionally, access to the southbound I-5 on-ramp from eastbound Nobel Drive will be closed. Work and closure hours will be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please use caution when traveling near the work area.

Lane Closures on Santa Fe Street for Roadway Improvements: Beginning Monday, July 11 and continuing for approximately eight weeks, crews will improve and repave the roadway on Santa Fe Street between Damon Avenue and Balboa Avenue near the businesses. Daytime lane reductions will be in place at all other times; through traffic access will be maintained. Nighttime full closures will be in place from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Please follow detour routes and signage.

Pacific Highway Lane Closures: Beginning Tuesday, May 31, and continuing for approximately two months, crews will build a median barrier wall on Pacific Highway near the Old Town Transit Center. A single lane closure will be in place in both directions on Pacific Highway for 24 hours a day as crews perform this work. Through traffic access will be maintained and flaggers may be present at times to help direct traffic. Please use caution when traveling near the area. 

Lane Reduction at Cedar Street and Kettner Boulevard Intersection: Beginning Monday, June 20, and continuing through Wednesday, June 22, lane reductions will be in place at the intersection of Cedar Street and Kettner Boulevard as crews perform paving activities. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Crews will minimize impacts as much as possible. Please use caution when traveling.

Lane Reduction at Cedar Street and Kettner Boulevard Intersection: Beginning Monday, May 2, and continuing through Friday, May 6, lane closures and traffic controls will be in place at the intersection of Cedar Street and Kettner Boulevard as crews install new traffic poles and signals. Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Crews will minimize impacts as much as possible and flaggers will be present intermittently to guide vehicles. Please use caution when traveling near the area.

Fez Street Parking Restrictions and Eastgate Mall Lane Closure: Beginning Wednesday, December 1, and continuing through Monday, December 6, temporary parking restrictions will be in place on eastbound Fez Street as crews restore the sidewalk area. Additionally, a single westbound lane closure will be in place on Eastgate Mall from Easter Way to Genesee Avenue, as crews construct a driveway to access the Traction Power Substation in the canyon.

Santa Fe Street Traffic Shift: Beginning Tuesday, February 16 and continuing for approximately three weeks, traffic changes will be in effect on Santa Fe Street for crews to pave the Rose Creek Bikeway. Impacts will be in place between Karl Strauss Brewing Company and Jaguar Coventry Cars of San Diego. One lane will remain open at all times, and flaggers will be present to direct traffic. Driveway impacts are anticipated but access will be maintained. Work hours will be Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Widening of W. Morena Boulevard: UPDATE: Beginning Monday, January 18 and continuing for approximately three months, lane closures will be in place on W. Morena Boulevard. Crews will widen the boulevard and construct a pedestrian ramp that will provide access to the future Tecolote Road Trolley Station. The closures will be in place near the Tecolote Road overpass. One lane will remain open in each direction and through traffic will be maintained. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but closures will be in place 24 hours a day. Crews will minimize impacts as much as possible.

Full Closure of Vega Street: Beginning Monday, November 30 and continuing for approximately 3 weeks, a full closure of Vega Street will be in place at the intersection of W. Morena Boulevard and continuing southwest to its terminus. During the closure, crews will demolish and reconstruct Vega Street to improve access to the future Tecolote Road Trolley Station. Construction activities will include demolition, excavation, paving, curb installation, and traffic signal modifications. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Access to nearby businesses will be maintained.

Daytime Construction for Future Tecolote Road Trolley Station: Beginning Monday, April 20 and continuing for the next several weeks, daytime construction activities are scheduled near Tecolote Road and W. Morena Boulevard to improve access to the future Tecolote Road Trolley Station. Crews will be removing vegetation and preparing the embankment for construction of a pedestrian ramp that will connect Tecolote Road and W. Morena Boulevard. Work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work will require the use of vegetation clearing equipment and may generate noise. Crews will minimize impacts as much as possible.

Morena Boulevard Lane and Sidewalk Closures between Gesner Street and Jellett Street: Starting February 19, a sidewalk closure and traffic controls will be in effect on northbound Morena Boulevard to accommodate ongoing Mid-Coast Trolley construction activities. A single lane of northbound Morena Boulevard will be closed between Gesner Street and Jellett Street, along with the sidewalk at the southeast corner of the Morena Boulevard and Ingulf Street intersection. One lane of northbound traffic will remain open on Morena Boulevard, and access to businesses will be maintained at all times. Traffic control signs will be posted for construction zone safety.

Underground Systems Work: Through late 2020, construction crews will continue intermittent work and testing on underground communication and electrical systems for the Mid-Coast Trolley project within the railroad right-of-way between Taylor Street in Old Town and Cedar Street in Downtown San Diego. General work hours will be Sundays through Thursdays, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., and some day and weekend work may be required. For more information on each work location, please view the fliers below: 

    Morena Boulevard Construction Activities: Beginning May 2, northbound Morena Boulevard, from Balboa Avenue to Tecolote Road, will be reduced to one lane. Southbound Morena Boulevard is reduced to one lane of traffic in some areas. Work hours will be during the day, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., but closures will remain in place 24 hours a day.

    Marian Bear Memorial Park: Crews have fenced off an area within the Rose Creek Channel, near the existing railroad tracks, for construction activities and staging equipment purposes. There will be no access along the Rose Creek channel between Marian Bear Memorial Park and Rose Creek open space. Users of the Marian Bear Park trail should avoid entering or passing through the construction area. Please follow direction of the posted signs.

    Parking Lot Closures for Transit Center Improvements: UPDATE: This work will continue Monday, August 16, through Wednesday, August 18. Beginning Monday, July 26, and continuing intermittently through Monday, August 9, full closures of the parking lots at the Old Town Transit Center will be in place as crews make improvements to the those lots. Improvement activities include cleaning and layout inspections, and concrete repairs and replacement. Closures will rotate intermittently throughout the different parking lots. Two parking lots may be closed at a time, but access will be maintained to the remaining lot. Crews will begin improvement activities in the north parking lot and will work their way south. Each closure will be in place for 24 hours a day. Please note that while regular work days will be Mondays through Fridays, some additional weekend work is required. Following the concrete repairs and improvements, crews will return to stripe the parking lots during non-revenue service hours.

    La Jolla Village Square Surface Parking Area Closures: UPDATE: In late June, crews will begin the third of four phases in their effort to reconfigure the La Jolla Village Square surface parking area. This is a continuation of work that began on March 2, 2021 to improve access to the Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure as well as overall traffic flow. Construction activities will include asphalt demolition, new asphalt and concrete placement, lighting installations, striping, and landscaping. Typical work hours will be Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work will be phased and completed in fenced-off sections of the parking area. Access to businesses, the mall entrance, the underground parking garage, and the Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure will be maintained at all times. Work is expected to be completed by fall 2021. In anticipation of this work, the Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure opened to the public on February 28, 2021, and is available for use by retail patrons.

    Full Closures of Northbound and Southbound Morena Boulevard: Beginning Tuesday, July 6, and continuing through Thursday, July 8, full nighttime closures of northbound and southbound Morena Boulevard will be in place as crews place asphalt near the future Clairemont Drive Trolley Station. Work also will require full nighttime closures of the intersection at Ingulf Street. Work and closure hours will be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Detour signs will be posted. Please use caution when traveling near the work area.

    Full Closure of Southbound Morena Boulevard Ramp to Westbound Balboa Avenue: Beginning Monday, June 14, and continuing through Tuesday, July 6, a full closure of the southbound Morena Boulevard ramp to westbound Balboa Avenue will be in place as crews rebuild Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramps and sidewalks for the future Balboa Avenue Transit Center. Work and closure hours will be in effect 24 hours a day. Traffic control and detour signs will be posted. Please use caution when travelling near the work area.

    Full Closures of Genesee Avenue: On Friday, April 16, crews will begin asphalt demolition, paving, striping, and traffic signal installations on Genesee Avenue. This work begins the final phase of roadway construction activities on Genesee Avenue for the Mid-Coast Trolley project. Work will continue for approximately four weeks and will require full closures of Genesee Avenue between Regents Road and Nobel Drive. Crews will work in sections, and the full closures will be phased. For the first two weeks, work and closure hours will be from 8 p.m. through 5 p.m. the following day, Sundays through Thursdays. Please note that the first night of work has been scheduled on a Friday to accommodate a local event. Residential and school driveway access will be maintained. Please expect noise as this work is completed and use caution when traveling near the work area.

    Construction of UTC Transit Center Parking Structure: Beginning in early February and continuing through November 2021, construction activities will take place in the surface parking area of University Towne Centre, near Macy’s, as crews build a parking structure for the UTC Transit Center. Work hours will be Mondays through Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Please use caution when traveling near the work area.

    Full Closure of Voigt Drive Bridge: Beginning Monday, October 19, a full closure of the Voigt Drive bridge will go into effect. East of the bridge, Voigt Drive will reopen to traffic. Additionally, inbound access to Scripps Health facilities via Voigt Drive will be available from the east only and outbound access will remain closed. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. but may vary depending on the type of construction activity required. The full closure of Voigt Drive bridge is expected to be in place through April 2021. This work is part of ongoing efforts for the Voigt Drive Improvements project, which will realign Campus Point Drive permanently to provide direct access to the future Voigt Drive Trolley Station and to improve traffic flow in the area.

    Lane Closures on Pacific Highway, Taylor Street, and Rosecrans Street: UPDATE: Beginning Monday, July 27, construction activities will begin at the Old Town Transit Center for transit related improvements. This is a continuation of ongoing efforts to prepare for the anticipated increase in Trolley crossings at Taylor Street upon completion of the Mid-Coast Trolley project. Work began in late February 2020 and is anticipated to continue through summer 2021. Intermittent lane closures will continue to be in place on Pacific Highway, Taylor Street, and Rosecrans Street and additional work is planned for the nearby Park & Ride. These activities will require both daytime and nighttime work. Daytime work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nighttime work hours will be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please use caution when traveling in the area and follow signage.

    Lane Reductions and Freeway Off-ramp Closure at Balboa Avenue: Beginning Sunday, May 9, and continuing for approximately three weeks, nighttime lane reductions will be in place on Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue, between Mission Bay Drive and Moraga Avenue, for crews to make improvements along the median. Additionally, nighttime full closures of the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue will be in place. Work and closure hours will be Sundays through Thursdays, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.     Santa Fe Street Parking Reductions: In April, crews will begin the permanent removal of parking on the west side of Santa Fe Street, between Karl Strauss Brewing Company (5965 Santa Fe Street) and Coventry Cars of San Diego (5097 Santa Fe Street), in preparation for construction of the Rose Creek Bikeway. Portions of Santa Fe Street will be intermittently reduced to a single lane to accommodate construction. Access to businesses will be maintained.

    Rose Creek Bikeway ConstructionPreliminary construction of the Rose Creek Bikeway began in January 2018. Initial work included clearing and removing vegetation in the construction area near the creek between Santa Fe Street and I-5. Major construction began in June 2018, including construction of the trail, under-crossings, and a bridge. Project completion is anticipated in spring 2020.

    Gilman Drive Bike Lane Near Rose Canyon Bike Path: A portion of the bike lane on Gilman Drive, below the I-5 freeway overpass, will be intermittently closed for project construction access. Cyclists will still be able to access the Rose Canyon Bike Path. Please exercise extra caution when traveling near the work area.

    Full Closure of Northbound Campus Point Drive: Beginning June 1, a full closure of northbound Campus Point Drive will go into effect between Medical Center Drive and Genesee Avenue for crews to continue efforts to realign the roadway for the Voigt Drive Improvements Project. Southbound access on Campus Point Drive will remain open and access to the UC San Diego Medical Center will be maintained, though there may be traffic delays. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. but may vary depending on the type of construction activity required. The closure is expected to be in place through fall 2021.

    Nighttime Construction along Genesee Avenue: Beginning in late May and continuing for approximately two months, crews will be performing exterior finish work on the Trolley bridge above Genesee Avenue, between Regents Road and Nobel Drive. The construction activities require nighttime closures of Genesee Avenue. Typical work hours will be Sundays through Thursdays, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please expect noise as this work is completed. The construction team is aware of residents in the area and will minimize impacts as much as possible. Please follow signage and use caution when traveling in the area.

    Balboa Avenue Lane Closures: Beginning Friday, April 9, and continuing for approximately two weeks, lane closures will be in place on eastbound Balboa Avenue, between the Morena Boulevard overpass to Balboa Avenue and Moraga Avenue, as crews complete bus pad improvements. 

    Additionally, MTS bus service will be temporarily relocated east of the bus stop at Balboa Avenue and Moraga Avenue from Friday, April 9, through Friday, April 23. Through access on eastbound Balboa Avenue and ramp access from Morena Boulevard will be maintained. Please follow posted signage and use caution when traveling in the area.     Lane Closures at Genesee Avenue and Nobel Drive Intersection: On Thursday, April 15, there will be overnight lane closures at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Nobel Drive for paving work. A full closure of northbound Genesee Avenue will be in place from Nobel Drive to Esplanade Court. Additionally, full closures will be in place on eastbound and westbound Nobel Drive between Genesee Avenue and Lombard Place. Work hours will be 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. Residential access will be maintained at all times. Please expect noise as this work is completed and use caution when traveling near the work area.

    Closure of Eastbound Nobel Drive: On Wednesday, April 14, an overnight full closure of eastbound Nobel Drive will be in place from the entrances of the Shops at La Jolla Village and La Jolla Village Square to the southbound I-5 on-ramp. Additionally, access to the southbound I-5 on-ramp from eastbound Nobel Drive will be closed. During the closures, crews will pave the roadway. Work and closure hours will be from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Driveway access will be maintained at all times. Please heed all traffic signs and use caution when traveling near the work area.

    Full Closure of La Jolla Village Drive: On Thursday, April 1, an overnight full closure will be in place on the westbound and eastbound lanes of La Jolla Village Drive, between Genesee Avenue and Costa Verde Boulevard. The closure will be in effect from 11:59 p.m. on Thursday to 5 a.m. on Friday, for SDG&E crews to perform underground electrical activities. Please use caution while traveling in the area.

    Full Closure of Executive Square Driveway: Beginning Thursday, March 18 and continuing through Sunday, March 22, a full closure of the Executive Square driveway will be in place for crews to replace a cross gutter. Construction activities will include demolition and placing concrete, which will require several days to cure. Work and closure hours will be from 8 p.m. on Thursday to 5 a.m. on Monday. Access will be maintained, and signage will be in place. Please use caution when traveling in the work area.

    Full Closure of Executive Square Driveway: Beginning Wednesday, March 3 at 6:30 a.m. and continuing through Monday, March 8, at 5 a.m., a full closure of the Executive Square driveway will be in place. The closure will be in effect just east of the driveway's intersection with Genesee Avenue for crews to set a staircase for the future Executive Drive Trolley Station and replace a cross gutter to help improve drainage at the intersection. Detour routes and signage will be in place for motorists.

    Construction of Nobel Drive Trolley Station Parking Structure: Construction of the Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure is anticipated to be completed in February 2021, and construction efforts will continue through the holiday season. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, with occasional weekend work. To accommodate retail customers during the holiday season, complimentary valet service will be available Friday, November 20, 2020 through January 15, 2021, from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. UPDATE: Beginning Monday, August 3 and continuing for approximately two weeks, crews will be performing utility work for the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure in the La Jolla Village Square parking area. Work hours are Sunday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Access to businesses, the shop entrance, and underground parking will be maintained at all times. UPDATE: Beginning Saturday, April 25, crews will be placing concrete for construction of the future Nobel Drive Trolley Station parking structure in the La Jolla Village Square parking area. Concrete pours will continue intermittently through November 2020. Construction noise from back up alarms and concrete trucks may be present. The concrete pours will typically begin at 12:05 a.m., but work hours may vary. Access to businesses and shops will be maintained at all times. Construction of the parking structure began in January 2020 and is anticipated to continue through fall 2020. Typical work hours are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Once complete, the parking structure will provide spaces for transit patrons and retail customers.

    Full Closure of Northbound Pacific Highway: On Saturday, February 27, a full closure will be in place on northbound Pacific Highway for crews to repave the roadway. Lane closures will be in place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., from Kurtz Street to the intersection with Taylor Street. This work is part of ongoing improvements for the Old Town Transit Center and adjacent roadways, to prepare for an increase in Trolley crossings at Taylor Street upon completion of the Mid-Coast Trolley project.

    Friars Road: In fall 2016, crews began work along Friars Road between Sea World Drive and Napa Street to build the San Diego River Bridge Double Track project in advance of construction on the Mid Coast Trolley project. Several traffic control phases involving multiple lane closures and shifts will be implemented in this area throughout the course of the project to help facilitate this work. The concrete barrier railing that has been placed on Friars Road is to support both projects and also is expected to last throughout the project duration.

    Full Closure of Friars Road: On Tuesday, February 23, a full closure of eastbound and westbound Friars Road will be in place between Sea World Drive and Napa Street, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. This closure is necessary for crews to restripe the roadway as they complete the restoration process for Friars Road. Please detour via Sea World Drive, Tecolote Road, Morena Boulevard, and Napa Street.

    Full Closure of Southbound Morena Boulevard: UPDATE: On Thursday, February 18, crews will continue to set canopies for the future Clairemont Drive Trolley Station. To accommodate this work, a full closure will be in place on southbound Morena Boulevard from Gesner Street to Ingulf Street. Work and closure hours will be from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This is a continuation of work that began on Tuesday, February 9. Please follow signage and use caution when traveling in the area.

    Full Closures of La Jolla Village Drive: Beginning the week of Sunday, January 31 and continuing for approximately two weeks, full closures will be in place on the eastbound and westbound lanes of La Jolla Village Drive. During the closures, SDG&E crews will perform underground electrical activities. The first week of full closures will begin on the westbound lanes of La Jolla Village Drive and the following week, there will be full closures on the eastbound lanes of the roadway. Work and closure hours will be Sundays through Thursdays, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.

    Full Closure of Friars Road: On Tuesday, January 12, a full closure of eastbound and westbound Friars Road will be in place between Sea World Drive and Napa Street, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. This closure is necessary for crews to perform a traffic switch in preparation for roadway restoration work. Please detour via Sea World Drive, Tecolote Road, Morena Boulevard, and Napa Street. The restoration work on Friars Road will continue through the remainder of January. One lane will remain open in each direction during this time. Additional nighttime full closures may be needed, and notice will be provided beforehand.

    Full Closure of Executive Drive: Beginning Sunday, January 17 and continuing through Tuesday, January 19, a full closure of Executive Drive will be in place east of Genesee Avenue. During the closure, crews will demolish the area and pour concrete to remove and replace a cross gutter. Work and closure hours will be from 7 p.m. on Sunday through 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Please heed all traffic signs and use caution when traveling near the work area.

    Full Closure of Regents Road: Beginning Sunday, December 20 and continuing through Tuesday, December 22, a full closure of Regents Road will be in place between Genesee Avenue and Health Sciences Drive. During the closure, crews will demolish the roadway and pour concrete to remove and replace a cross gutter. Work and closure hours will be from 8 p.m. on Sunday through 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Please use caution when traveling near the work area and follow signage.

    Full Closures of Washington Street: On Tuesday, November 17 and Wednesday, November 18, nighttime full closures of eastbound and westbound Washington Street will be in place between Hancock Street and Frontage Road. During the closures, crews will complete work on the underground communication and electrical systems for the Trolley in addition to repaving the roadway. Work and closure hours are from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Please use caution when traveling in the area and follow posted signage.

    Partial Intersection Closure at Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive: On Monday, November 9, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., crews will work on the traffic signals and rewire connections at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and La Jolla Village Drive for the future Trolley. A full southbound closure on Genesee Avenue will be in place between Executive Drive and Nobel Drive, with one northbound lane open.     Santa Fe Street Traffic Shift and Parking Changes: On Monday, October 19, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., a traffic shift will be in place on Santa Fe Street as crews restripe the roadway between Karl Strauss Brewing Company (5965 Santa Fe Street) and Coventry Cars of San Diego (5097 Santa Fe Street), to accommodate construction of the Rose Creek Bikeway.     Closures and Traffic Shifts for Balboa Avenue Bridge Construction: On Thursday, October 15, from 10 p.m.to 5 a.m., a full closure of the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue will be in place for crews to perform construction activities on the Balboa Avenue Bridge. Additionally, lane restrictions and a traffic shift will be in place on Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue. One lane will remain open to traffic in each direction.     Full Closure of Voigt Drive: A full closure of Voigt Drive is in effect between parking lot P701 and Campus Point Drive. The closure is required for the Voigt Drive Improvements Project, which will realign Voigt Drive and Campus Point Drive permanently to provide direct access to the future Voigt Drive Trolley Station and to improve traffic flow in the area. The closure began Monday, April 20 and is anticipated to continue through fall 2021. Typical work hours will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., though occasional nighttime and weekend work may be required. Traffic controls will be in place including temporary traffic signals, temporary wayfinding and detour signage, and roadway and sidewalk reconfigurations. UPDATE: Beginning July 6, 2020, access to and from Scripps Health facilities via Voigt Drive will be closed. Both inbound and outbound access will be closed for approximately one month while crews rebuild the driveway and adjacent roadway. Once complete, crews will restore inbound access to Scripps Health facilities from Voigt Drive. Note that access via Voigt Drive will be available from the west only.     Full Closures of Rose Canyon Bike Path: Beginning Tuesday, September 8 and continuing for approximately two weeks, nighttime full closures of the Rose Canyon Bike Path will be in effect for crews to conduct landscaping work.     Construction of Trolley Tunnel Underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive: Starting March 3, crews began construction of the Trolley underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive. To accommodate construction, lanes on La Jolla Colony Drive will be reconfigured to provide one lane in each direction. Construction is expected to be complete by late 2019. Some full weeknight and weekend closures may be required throughout construction, during which time, there will be no access to La Jolla Colony Drive from east of the Interstate 5 on- and off-ramps to Rosenda Court.

    Full Closure of Ocean Beach Bike Path: Beginning Monday, February 3 at 6 a.m., a temporary full closure of the Ocean Beach Bike path will go into effect between Pacific Highway and Morena Boulevard. The closure will be in place for approximately four weeks while crews replace the bike path and install a handrail. The bike path is anticipated to reopen by 6 p.m. on Friday, February 28. This work was originally scheduled to begin on Tuesday, January 21 but was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. UPDATE: the reopening of the Ocean Beach Bike Path has been been postponed. The closure is necessary for crews to pave the final section of the new bike path and to remove the temporary ramp currently installed near Gilman Drive.     Permanent Realignment of Rose Canyon Bike Path: In summer 2019, two sections of the Rose Canyon Bike Path will be relocated to the newly constructed permanent bike path. A portion of the temporary bike path that is now located on the shoulder of Interstate 5 will move to the newly constructed path by Monday, June 17. A second portion of the temporary bike path, now located along I-5 from north of Santa Fe Street to just north of SR 52, will move to the newly constructed path by Wednesday, July 3.     Closures of Nobel Drive: Starting December 8, full overnight closures will be in place for crews to remove falsework from the Trolley viaduct above Nobel Drive, from the northbound I-5 off-ramp to the entrances of the Shops at La Jolla Village and La Jolla Village Square. Closures will begin Sunday, December 8, and will continue through Tuesday, December 10, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. There will also be a full closure of the southbound I-5 on-ramp from Nobel Drive, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Driveway access will be maintained at all times.     Impacts to Nobel Drive: Starting September 3, traffic controls and lane closures will be in place as crews perform driveway improvement construction activities along Nobel Drive, between Villa La Jolla Drive and Interstate 5.     Morena Boulevard Construction Activities: On Saturday, October 5, crews will be pouring concrete for the ramps at the future Clairemont Drive Trolley station. Work hours will be from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Northbound and southbound Morena Boulevard will remain open. Flaggers will be present to direct trucks in to and out of the construction site. The use of concrete trucks may cause moderate noise levels. Please use caution when driving near the work area.

    Lane Closures on Morena Boulevard: The closures originally scheduled to begin on Monday, September 16, have been postponed to the following week. Now beginning Monday, September 23, and continuing through Thursday, September 26, a full closure will be in place on southbound Morena Boulevard, between Gesner Street and Ingulf Street, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night. Crews will be pouring concrete for the platform at Clairemont Station. Please expect some noise from concrete trucks. Traffic controls will be in place. Please follow detour signs and use caution when traveling in the area.

    Train Control System Upgrade: Beginning the evening of Friday, September 20, full weekend lane reductions will be in place across the railway tracks at Taylor Street as crews upgrade the train control system from the Santa Fe Depot to the Old Town Transit Center Station.     Northbound I-5 Off-Ramp and Lane Closures at Balboa Avenue: A full closure of the northbound Interstate 5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue is scheduled from midnight on Friday, July 12, to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 13, as crews continue paving the newly widened off-ramp. During construction, one lane will be closed on eastbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue between Mission Bay Drive and Moraga Avenue. Additionally, one lane will be closed on northbound Interstate 5, between the Mission Bay Drive off-ramp and the Balboa Avenue off-ramp, from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 13.

    Overnight Closure of Southbound I-5 Lanes: From 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, through 5 a.m. on Friday, March 1, temporary overnight closures will continue on southbound Interstate 5 as crews pour concrete to build the bridge for the Trolley overpass at Voigt Drive. Closure will be in effect on SB I-5 from the I-5/I-805 Interchange to La Jolla Village Drive. Please take alternate routes to avoid potential congestion.     Northbound I-5 and Off-Ramp and Lane Closures at Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue and Grand Avenue/Garnet Avenue: As part of ongoing construction activities on the off-ramp, a full weekend closure of the I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue is scheduled from Friday, February 22, at 9 p.m. to Sunday, February 24, at 9 p.m. The off-ramp will be shifted to newly constructed pavement adjacent to the existing off-ramp.  A single lane closure of the northbound I-5 from Grand Avenue/Garnet Avenue to Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue will also be required from Friday, February 22, at 8 p.m. to Sunday, February 24, at 3 a.m. Additionally, motorists can anticipate nighttime closures of eastbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue on Friday, February 22, and Saturday, February 23, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. During the nighttime closures, one lane of eastbound traffic will be shifted to westbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue. Daytime single lane closures of eastbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue will also be in place Saturday, February 23, and Sunday, February 24, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. Motorists that require access to the off-ramp will be detoured northbound on Mission Bay Drive to Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue. Off-ramp and roadwork construction activities will be completed in phases and intermittent nighttime and weekend closures of the northbound I-5 off-ramp to Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue will continue through summer 2019.

    Gilman Drive Bridge: Work began in late 2016 on I-5 near Gilman Drive to prepare for construction of the Gilman Drive Bridge. Crews have installed temporary barricades near Gilman Drive that will remain for approximately two years. The new bridge will connect the west and east sides of UC San Diego and span I-5.

    Intermittent Partial Closures on Genesee Avenue: This February, intermittent partial closures continue along Genesee Avenue in support of Trolley bridge construction. Girders, or large beams, will be installed on top of columns to build the viaduct, or bridge structure, that will carry the Trolley along its route. Crews have now placed girders in five different major intersections along Genesee Avenue. Though girders will continue to be set along Genesee Avenue, all required long-term closures have been completed.

    Balboa Avenue Railroad Bridge Demolition: Work to demolish the Balboa Avenue Railroad Bridge and construct a new railroad bridge began May 17 and will continue through early 2019. Construction of a railroad bridge spanning Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue is ongoing. To accommodate this work, lane and ramp closures, originally scheduled through October 2018, will be in place intermittently through early 2019. Work hours will be Sundays through Thursdays, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. One lane each of westbound and eastbound traffic on Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue will remain open at all times. Motorists can expect the following intermittent traffic controls: 

    • Closures of westbound and eastbound Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue, from Interstate 5 to Moraga Avenue.
    • Closures of north and south Morena Boulevard on- and off-ramps.
    • Closure of the Balboa Avenue/Garnet Avenue off-ramp from northbound Interstate 5.

    Lane Reductions on La Jolla Village Drive: Beginning Sunday, September 9, continuing through mid- to late 2019, eastbound and westbound lanes of La Jolla Village Drive will be temporarily reduced to two lanes, between Costa Verde Blvd. and Executive Way. Crews will be erecting falsework to prepare for girder installation activities.

    Morena Boulevard Lane Closures near Tecolote Road: A nighttime closure of northbound and southbound W. Morena Boulevard, from the W. Morena Boulevard/Morena Boulevard split to Vega Street, will be in place starting the week of September 4 through early December 2018 to accommodate utility work. The closure will be in effect Sundays through Thursdays, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Please follow the posted detour signs and traffic controls when traveling near the work area.

    Temporary Realignment of Rose Canyon Bike Path and I-5 Impacts: Starting June 13, 2018, a southern portion of the Rose Canyon Bike Path will be temporarily relocated to the west side of the train tracks, east of Interstate 5 and north of Santa Fe Street, while crews construct a new, permanent path. The interim path will connect the north end of Santa Fe Street to about 1,000 feet north of State Route 52. A temporary realignment of the northern portion of the bike path is also in place, rerouting to a protected, temporary two-lane bikeway located on the outside shoulder of the northbound I-5 off-ramp. Sections of the permanent path will be reopened as they are completed starting in summer 2019. The full, permanent path is anticipated to open in 2020.
