Mid-Coast Grand Opening Celebration –

SANDAG and MTS hosted a grand opening to celebrate the Mid-Coast Trolley Extension's start of service. More than 8,500 people attended the event including community members, contractors, and partner agencies like Caltrans, UC San Diego, and the Federal Transit Administration. Several federal, state, and local leaders were also in attendance to celebrate the momentous occasion. The family-friendly festivities included free food and giveaways, live music and entertainment, a rock climbing wall and inflatable obstacles course, and more!
Mid-Coast on Morena Community Appreciation Festival –

SANDAG and MTS hosted a free festival to celebrate the Mid-Coast Extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley and thank the local community for their ongoing support of the project. Over 1,500 attendees joined in on the fun and had the unique opportunity to ride the Trolley extension before opening day. The event showcased the Tecolote Road, Clairemont Drive, and Balboa Avenue stations. The three stations are nearly complete, signifying a major milestone for the project. In addition to the Trolley rides, family-friendly festivities included local food vendors, live music, giveaways, and remarks from local leaders instrumental in getting the Trolley extension built on time and on budget.
The community festival followed the inaugural ride for local leaders on the Mid-Coast Trolley Extension, which took place on August 24, 2021. SANDAG Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear and U.S. Senator Alex Padilla were among dozens who rode the Trolley from the Tecolote Road Trolley Station to the Balboa Avenue Transit Center.
UTC Transit Center Parking Structure “Topping Out” Celebration –

SANDAG and MCTC celebrated the completed construction of the top level of the UTC Transit Center Parking Structure with a lunch for crews. The parking structure will support the Mid-Coast Extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley by providing direct access to the UTC Transit Center. The structure will be a shared facility for transit riders and Westfield UTC patrons.
VA Medical Center Trolley Station Unveiling –
June 23, 2021
SANDAG and MTS held a ceremony to unveil the future VA Medical Center Trolley Station, one of nine new stations that make up the Mid-Coast Extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley. At the event, SANDAG, MTS, and local leaders revealed the special design elements that were incorporated into the station to pay tribute to those who have served, including bronze seals and flags representing the U.S. Military branches. This station will significantly improve transit access to the VA Medical Center for veterans and healthcare workers.
Campus Point Drive Realignment –
April 21, 2021
SANDAG hosted a press event to celebrate the successful realignment of Campus Point Drive, a major construction milestone for the Mid-Coast Extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line Trolley. The realignment provides direct access to the UC San Diego Health La Jolla Trolley Station.
The Campus Point Drive realignment was completed through a concurrent Caltrans effort to reduce traffic congestion in the area. The realignment was constructed by MCTC, alongside the Trolley extension. SANDAG Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear and San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria joined SANDAG, Caltrans, MTS, and UC San Diego leadership at the event.
Construction Halfway Point Celebration -

On October 22, 2016, several thousand people attended the Mid-Coast Trolley groundbreaking and community celebration held on the field at The Preuss School UCSD near the future Voigt Drive Trolley station. Attendees enjoyed a free community picnic on the grass while learning about the upcoming construction of the region’s largest public transit project.
