The Pershing Bikeway will improve north-south connectivity for people who bike and walk through Balboa Park and between North Park and Downtown San Diego.

The 2.3-mile Pershing Bikeway will begin in North Park at the intersection of Utah Street and Landis Street. The route will run south along Utah Street and connect to Pershing Drive at Upas Street, then continue through Balboa Park on Pershing Drive to connect to C Street in Downtown San Diego. Proposed project features include buffered bike lanes, a two-way separated bikeway, and a path for people walking. The bikeway will create more comfortable and convenient biking and walking conditions for people of all ages and abilities.

The project will transform Pershing Drive into a “low-stress” street that will be more convenient and comfortable for people biking, walking, rolling, and driving. The Pershing Bikeway will improve access to Balboa Park and will serve as a critical regional connection for people who travel through the area.

SANDAG is leading the effort to complete this project as a component of the Regional Bike Network. It is one of several high priority projects included in the Regional Bike Early Action Program, a $200 million initiative adopted by the SANDAG Board of Directors in September 2013. As part of the project’s environmental review process, the SANDAG Transportation Committee approved the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) exemption at its meeting on January 20, 2017.
