Washington Street and Bachman Place Bikeways (Segment 3)

Project Overview

Washington Street Bikeway and Wall RenderingThe Washington Street and Bachman Place Bikeways project is one of five segments planned as part of the Uptown Bikeways, which will enhance neighborhood connectivity between Uptown, Old Town, Mission Valley, Downtown San Diego, North Park, and Balboa Park.

The Washington Street Bikeway project consists of separated bikeways and buffered bike lanes on Washington Street from the Washington Street Trolley Station to University Avenue connecting the Middletown and Mission Hills neighborhoods. The Washington Street Bikeway also would include separated bikeways on San Diego Avenue from Washington Street to Noel Street. The Bachman Place Bikeway project consists of shared lane markings with a contra flow bikes lane along Third Avenue from Washington Street to Lewis Street and along Lewis Street from Bachman Place to Third Avenue.

Bachman Place includes buffered bike lanes and shared lane markings from Lewis Street to Hotel Circle South. Separated bikeways would be installed on Hotel Circle South, Camino De La Reina, and Avenida Del Rio from Bachman Place to Riverwalk Drive, connecting Uptown to Mission Valley and the San Diego River Trail. Shared lane markings and wayfinding signage will also be installed on Third Avenue from Washington Street to Walnut Avenue, and along Walnut Avenue from Third Avenue to Fifth Avenue. The project includes traffic calming measures and improvements for people walking, such as high visibility crosswalks, curb extensions, and traffic signal enhancements.

Separated bikeways are protected from vehicle lanes by a vertical element such as raised medians, on-street parking, or bollards, and provide a degree of safety desired by people who are interested in biking for transportation, but are concerned about the safety of riding with vehicle traffic. Buffered bike lanes are conventional bike lanes combined with a painted buffer that increases the distance between people on bikes and the adjacent motor vehicle travel lane and/or parking lane.

The Washington Street and Bachman Place Bikeways segment is currently in the final design phase. For more information, view the project's fact sheet in English and en Español. Please check the Notices tab for project updates or sign up to be added to our email list.
