Sweetwater Bikeway, Plaza Bonita Segment

Sweetwater BikewayThe Plaza Bonita segment of the Sweetwater Bikeway consists of a half-mile Class I bikeway on the west side of Plaza Bonita Road in the City of National City. The bike path closes a gap in the Sweetwater Bikeway and extends from approximately 2,000 feet north of the intersection of Bonita Mesa Road and Plaza Bonita Road to approximately 400 feet south of the same intersection, connecting to existing Class I bike paths at each end.

The Sweetwater Bikeway begins at Sweetwater Regional Park, continues past the Plaza Bonita Shopping Center along the Sweetwater River and connects to the Bayshore Bikeway on the west end. At the Plaza Bonita Mall, the bikeway provides access to transit. The connection of the path to the Bayshore Bikeway provides access to multiple transit and multi-modal stations with connections throughout the region. The bikeway serves both recreational and commuter biking needs.

Completion of this trail and other similar Class I bikeways make an important contribution in moving toward an interconnected regional bike network throughout the region. Class I bike paths are bikeways that are physically separate from vehicular traffic.
