Monroe Bikeway

The Monroe Bikeway was originally planned as part of the North Park | Mid-City Bikeways, which will add approximately 12 miles of bikeways and connect the North Park and Mid-City neighborhoods. The project will help fulfill the vision laid out in the San Diego Regional Bike Plan to make riding a bike a safer and more convenient choice for everyday travel and will help accomplish the goals of the City of San Diego’s Bicycle Master Plan and Climate Action Plan. The North Park | Mid-City Bikeways project is a vital part of the regional bike network, GO by BIKE, and a high priority project funded through the Regional Bike Plan Early Action Program.

Current Activities

From mid-2018 to early 2019, SANDAG worked under direction from the City of San Diego to closely examine the existing conditions on Monroe Avenue. Together, the agencies determined that, ultimately, it would not be feasible using current design standards within the existing roadway to provide a safe biking experience, and therefore concluded that other route options should be considered to connect the regional bikeway network to the College Area.

Since there is not a feasible regional bikeway alignment on Monroe Avenue between Euclid Avenue and Aldine Drive, the City of San Diego and SANDAG will pursue funding opportunities to conduct a planning study to examine other network alignment alternatives, putting this project in the planning phase.
