Imperial Avenue Bikeway

Project Overview

Para obtener más información, consulte la hoja informativa del proyecto.

The Imperial Avenue Bikeway will help create safer streets for people who walk, bike, drive, and take transit in the Southeastern San Diego Community. The 3-mile bikeway will consist of separated bikeways and buffered bike lanes on Imperial Avenue between 17th Street and 47th Street. The project also will include buffered bike lanes along J Street from 17th Street to 19th Street and shared lane markings on 20th Street from J Street to L Street, on L Street from 20th Street to 22nd Street, and on 22nd Street from L Street to Imperial Avenue. Other proposed project features include high-visibility crosswalks, raised crosswalks, and curb extensions. These improvements will improve access to local shops and markets along Imperial Avenue while maintaining the community character of these historic neighborhoods. A future phase will provide improved connections to the community from Downtown San Diego.

The Imperial Avenue Bikeway is considered a priority project by SANDAG and is an important element of the San Diego Regional Bike Plan, which aims to make walking and biking more convenient travel choices by creating an interconnected regional bike network. Completion of the project will help implement the community’s vision to create a more pedestrian- and bike-friendly environment, as set forth in the recently adopted Southeastern San Diego Community Plan and Encanto Neighborhoods Community Plan. The project is also consistent with the City of San Diego’s Climate Action Plan and addresses one of the City’s Vision Zero high-priority corridors.

SANDAG published a Traffic and Safety Impact Assessment for the project on March 27, 2018, and hosted an open house and public hearing for the Imperial Avenue Bikeway project on April 11, 2018. Visit our Get Involved page to learn more. The Imperial Avenue Bikeway project is currently in final design. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2020.
