Positive Train Control
To ensure the safety and security of customers and employees, Positive Train Control (PTC) improvements are being installed from the Orange County border to Downtown San Diego along the region’s portion of the coastal rail line, LOSSAN.
PTC is a proactive system of signal enforcement that stops a train before a potential collision or accident occurs. These improvements are being integrated with existing railroad dispatching systems to manage train traffic by using digital communications, global positioning systems, and on-board computers to continuously monitor train location and speed.
These improvements will be built in phases. The first phase of construction started in January 2013. NCTD is on target to implement PTC before the deadline of December 31, 2018.
Federal, state, and local funds of $87.3 million are making these improvements possible.
