Closures of I-5 lanes at Gilman Drive: Some night work will require lane and/or ramp closures on I-5 for work on the new Gilman Drive Bridge. Motorists should anticipate delays and take alternate routes to avoid potential congestion. This is part of a series of overnight closures needed to complete bridge infrastructure. View additional information.

Upcoming Closures:

Full closure of Northbound I-5: Thursday, April 5, from 10:30 p.m. to early morning Friday, April 6, at 5 a.m.; Northbound motorists will be detoured via Interstate 8, State Route 52, and the La Jolla Village Drive ramps. Traffic controls and detour signs will be placed to alert motorists in advance.

Concurrent with this project, SANDAG is designing and constructing the Mid-Coast Trolley project, an 11-mile extension of the San Diego Trolley Blue Line that runs parallel to and crosses over I-5. SANDAG is coordinating closely between the two projects to ensure smooth construction and effective use of space and resources.

First Concrete Poured on Iconic New Span Over I-5 (posted 12/4/17)

The first concrete was poured Thursday evening, November 30, on the Gilman Drive Bridge, an iconic new crossing that will soon gracefully span I-5 just north of the La Jolla Village Drive interchange. The new bridge will provide a much-needed connection between Gilman Drive on UC San Diego’s west campus and Medical Center Drive on the east campus.
